Fickle Food

This is Beans, isn’t she beautiful? I was told her momma was a Catahoula Cattle dog mix and her daddy was a Jack Russell terrier. I don’t know if that’s accurate but Beans is quite a mix. She has one blue eye and one brown, a merle coat and four, oddly dainty, white feet, one of her ears is perked while the other flops and she has a curious propensity for walking on her hind legs. She’s not what you’d call a tiny girl, about twenty pounds, nevertheless, she thinks she’s a lap dog.

We adopted Beans from a high kill shelter almost two years ago. She was literally a dead dog walking when I got there, the place was about to close for the week and she would have been gassed the following morning. Of course, Beans had no clue, she was in there grinning and wriggling around, delighted to meet someone new. I guess we were both lucky, I’d almost decided to wait until Monday to visit that shelter…I can’t tell you how many nightmares that has given me.

I’ve had dogs all of my life and Beans is definitely one of the best dogs I’ve ever had! She’s a great watch dog, she’s loyal and affectionate, she practically housebroke herself and she hardly ever barks–when I hear Beans barking I KNOW somethings terribly wrong and I’d better go see what’s up. I wouldn’t trade her for the world. And I know that she is thrilled to live with us, maybe she senses how close she came, who knows?

If you’re thinking about getting a dog PLEASE consider a shelter dog, there are millions of great dogs just like Beans being destroyed everyday…Just look at those eyes…
And remember, the only real solution is to spay and neuter all your pets!
