Gifts for The People You’re Not Buying For
Every time I go out holiday shopping, it seems like I find a ton of “perfect” gifts for the people I’m not buying gifts for, and nothing for the ones I AM buying for. Such is the case with the earrings below. They’d be perfect for this lady I know who always wears a gold magnetic bracelet – though I’m a little concerned that if she lifted her wrist to brush back her hair, her ear and wrist would be pulled together. Anyway, the point is that the earrings would look good with her bracelet.

A friend of mine recently told me a cool story about a gift she got – and it has made me rethink the whole concept of gifts. She had been written up in the local paper for her work with a local after school program. It was just her small-town, local paper, but a couple of weeks later, she got a package with a postmark from across the country. It was a handwritten story and thank you from someone who had read the article and found inspiration.
She was touched by the gesture, but there was no return address on the envelope and neither of us could ever find any evidence of the person existing – and believe me, we tried. We call it “the mystery of Coraline Hitchcock”, and even though it was such a simple gesture, it made a huge difference in her life. Although I realize not every gift can have that effect, that’s the homerun effect I’m aiming for when I try to dream up really great gifts.
